Bill Cosby’s professorship in Spelman College Suspended

Happenings

Spelman College has suspended The William and Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Endowed Professorship, a prestigious endowed professorship named in honor of Bill Cosby and his wife Camille, in the wake of his sexual assault scandal. Spelman announced the decision on late Sunday, December 14 on its website.

“The William and Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Endowed Professorship was established to bring positive attention and accomplished visiting scholars to Spelman College in order to enhance our intellectual, cultural and creative life; however, the current context prevents us from continuing to meet these objectives fully,” the college said in a statement, “Consequently, we will suspend the program until such time that the original goals can again be met.”

Spelman’s decision came after Bill decided to step down as a member of the board trustees at Temple University earlier this month. “I have always been proud of my association with Temple University,” the comedian said in a statement, “I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of the university and its students. As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees.”

Several colleges funded by the comedian, including High Point University in North Carolina, Berklee College of Music in Boston and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, also cut ties with him amid the sexual abuse scandal.
