Netflix Paid $60 Million For Brad Pitt’s movie “War Machine”

Netflix is paying a cool $60 million for Brad Pitt’s movie “War Machine.”

It was announced earlier this month that Pitt, 51, will star in the David Michod directed film, which will be available exclusively on Netflix. The streaming service reasoned that the massive price tag for “War Machine,” a satirical comedy based on late journalist Michael Hastings’s 2011 book “The Operators: The Wild And Terrifying Inside Story Of America’s War In Afghanistan,” was worth it given that Netflix has yet to prove itself in the feature film sphere.

“You have a new player in the market willing to invest in material that is provocative,” an industry insider told the Hollywood Reporter. “They have the money and need premium content to drive their subscription base.”

“It’s great for the specialty film business, since people might be more willing to see challenging, liberal-leaning material in the comfort of their own home [rather] than in a movie theater,” added another source. “More people might actually see the movie this way.”

Pitt’s next big screen appearance will be alongside wife Angelina Jolie in “By the Sea,” written and directed by Jolie. The romantic drama, which follows a couple (Jolie and Pitt) struggling with their marriage, hits theaters Nov. 13, 2015.

The superstar duo are also, according to reports, teaming up for the Richard Leakey biopic “Africa,” with Pitt set to star and Jolie set to direct. The script was written by “Forrest Gump” scribe Eric Roth.

Jolie said in a statement last year, “I’ve felt a deep connection to Africa and its culture for much of my life, and was taken with Eric’s beautiful script about a man drawn into the violent conflict with elephant poachers who emerged with a deeper understanding of man’s footprint and a profound sense of responsibility for the world around him.”

Jolie is also in talks to reprise her lead role in a “Maleficent” sequel.
