Ras Kimono Resurrects, Puts Death to Shame After 365 Days

Pearl Emmanuel

It was a hard day for reggae fans worldwide who woke up to the news of Ras Kimono's death flooding the news.

Oseloke Augustine Onwubuya, who hails from Onitsha-Ulorna, Delta State, known by his stage moniker, Ras Kimono, kissed the world goodbye on the 10th of June, 2018. Before his death, he was ready to start his European tour which was to kick-start a few days after but he complained of being ill and died shortly after and the tour was cancelled.

His death brought mourning to many, including Majek Fashek, Chief Tony Okoroji of COSON, King Wadada, and a host of several other musicians who looked up to and adored the 'Rub a dub Master'. In her tribute to her husband, Efe Kimono promised to oversee the continuance of Ras Kimono's music legacy and ensure that things ran just like he would have wanted. Shockingly, barely three months after the death of Raskimono, Efe followed suit. The pain of his departure was too much for her to bear. She joined her husband in a union of bliss beyond the earth.

The seat became vacant,.COSON feared that the death of Ras Kimono had truncated the better part of Reggae in Africa. They hoped and wished that Ras Kimono would awake from death and continue the legacy, and it seemed the universe listened.

A few months later, Ogechukwu Kimono Oje, Ras Kimono's daughter with his wife, Efe, rose to the take the mantle. Unknown to many, she had been preparing herself to learn from and work side by side with her father before his demise.

Oge returned from Germany to Nigeria and decided to walk in her father's shoes. She got music trainees to help her achieve her dreams. She wanted to surprise her father and make him proud of her. Ras Kimono, shorty before his death, had given instructions to his close friends to help Oge's career.

Now that Ras Kimono is no more, Oge has risen to claim the baton and continue the relay. In commemoration of Ras Kimono Memorial Day she launched her album titled "Good Ole Days". She also played some of her father's songs and it was evident that the spirit of Ras Kimono was alive at the event and still is. He has defeated death, as Oge is set to put reggae on the world's pedestal while honing her Kimono touch.
