45-year-old Nollywood actor turned politician, Desmond Elliot, in an interview with HipTV, has urged the federal government to ban foreign movies to enable local content grow.

He said in a statement:

“The federal government needs to consciously and intentionally focus on improving this industry. Treat it like you’re importing rice, ban all foreign content and make it difficult for all foreign content to come in, so the local content can grow.

“And then, you need to support (financially) the music industry, you need to support the film industry … even the comic industry as well …”

According to him, a restriction on foreign movies will shift the focus to growing our local content globally. Many have considered this statement of putting a restriction on the film open market while also trying to export local content globally contradictory.

Desmond was attacked and trolled online, as Hollywood fans slammed down his idea which they termed "ridiculous." The media personality, Daddy Freeze, also wrote on his social media page:

“Dear Brother Desmond, I love you, but I’m not with you on this. I should be able to choose what I want to watch if I’m paying for it, shouldn’t I? Why don’t you strive to raise Nollywood to Hollywood standards and then people will gravitate towards Nollywood naturally?”
