AY SHOW 2015: Celebrities turn out en masse for comedy show

Fola Akintomide

Starting out in stand-up comedy can be overwhelming and a little scary, Ayo Makun is one of the few comedians who have been able to hold it down in the industry with his numerous skits that have gone viral, his movie 30 days in Atlanta which is currently the highest grossing movie in Nigeria,  and his yearly sold out show tagged AY Live.

The 2015 edition of AY Live which took place at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Sunday, April 5, 2015, saw a host of  celebrities stormed the Maltina-sponsored comedy show and concert. In attendance at the AY Live comedy show were stars including Onyeka Onwenu, Uti Nwachukwu, Yomi Casual, IK Ogbonna, Funke Akindele, Toyin Aimakhu, Vector, Kiss Daniel, Okey Bakassi, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Lil Kesh among others.

The event  which was hosted by Cool FM’s OAP, Freeze started quite late; 2 hours behind the scheduled time which is 6:00pm, but nonetheless the guests were entertained with clips from AY’s highest grossing movie 30 days in Atlanta as the organizers tightened loose ends based on logistics. Eventually Mr. Freeze mounted the stage and apologized for the delay and also introduced the first act for the night, Ayobami – the comedian took  the awaiting crowd to another level.

Sexy Steel, Funny Bone, Pencil, Lafup  didn’t disappoint with their renditions, as the crowd geared up for a better performance.

The highlight of the night was the performance of Nigeria’s Queen of Africa pop music, Onyeka Onwenu, she trilled the fans with some of her hits like ‘Iyo gogo, Ekwe’, the crowd in response danced to the rhythm and joyously to the tune they heard, one would think she’s a saviour that just rose from the dead and was celebrated by her followers.

When AY mouonted the stage, he gave a shout out to Nigeria’s outgoing President, Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat at the just concluded election.  AY urged everyone to give a round of applause to Jonathan, stating that he is the reason the event could hold in peace. ‘Goodluck is a true epitome of what a statesman should be, and a real reflection of the change this country needs. He put the peace and wellbeing of this country before his ambition, and I can liken him to Jesus Christ today who sacrificed himself for us all and resurrected today,’ AY stated. The crowded hall heeded to his call to give Goodluck Jonathan a standing ovation.

Other acts that graced the stage includes: I GO DYE, Chi Gul, Seyi Law, Ushbebe, Princess, Shakara, Gordons, Helen Paul, Funny Bone, Phyno, Wizkid,  Lil Kesh,  Korede Bello among many others….
