The third edition of #TheConversation was held at Pentonrise Building Bodija, Ibadan; on July 26th 2015.

The event, convened by Joy Isi Bewaji, is a gathering where women and men share experiences on their societal/marital challenges. The theme – ‘Is Patriarchy our biggest social problem?’, was duly expounded by the headliners; Pearl Osibu, Ayodele Olofintuade, Bunmi Familoni and Abimbola Adelakun (a team of intellectual writers and feminists).

Just like its’ antecedent in Lagos and Abuja, the packed hall had an interesting banter of varied views and opinions from the audience.

Part of the success of the event was the reawakening of the guests to the realities of patriarchy in our society and the involvement of everybody; both male and female towards its sustained existence. It was deduced that the change/equality which #TheConversation aims at, may not be  achieved in this generation but like little drops of water – continuous advocacy will do the magic.

However, it was agreed upon that women have a key role to play in the abolishment of a patriarchal system. They need to groom their kids with the proper orientation of equality without prejudice as pointed out by Pearl Osibu. In contrast, Ademola, a guest said women are more favoured than their male counterparts. He also emphasised that men face a higher level of discrimination and struggle unlike the women folk.

In conclusion, regardless of the argument that men are faced with these challenges, the power of a woman and her umpteen responsibilities (domestic and professional) which is everly reflected in the society, goes a long way to prove that women must be accorded their duly deserved recognition and respect in the immediate society and beyond.
