The first radio station dedicated to women and their families launched in Lagos on the 18th of December 2015. The event which was themed- Radio as a tool for women development hosted by the CEO of the station, Veteran Ray power presenter, Mrs Toun Okewale-Sonaiya, attracted dignitaries from all over the country including Africa’s richest woman, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, who gave the keynote address at the event. Senator Abike Dabiri who was present on behalf of the first lady of Nigeria, Mrs Aisha Buhari, gave the welcome address.
Dele Momodu, Mrs Shade Okoya, Joke Silva, Gloria Edozie Young, Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, Tara Fela Durotoye, Adesuwa Onyeneke are among the distinguished guests at the event. It was surely an enlightening event which sought to educate the public, media and guests about the importance of a platform where women can lend their voices and speak on issues pertaining to them and their familes.
Mrs Folorunsho Alakija continued to challenge women, citing examples of women who had been good business women and wives and were doing excellently well at both. She quoted the words of Mary Wollsencraft- “I don’t wish women to have power over men but to have power over themselves“.
MrsToun Okewale- Sonaiya also buttressed the fact that the radio station wasn’t one meant to bash men but one for the development and empowerment of women, while addressing issues pertaining to women and their families. The event featured a discussion panel that answered questions from the guests about the process and programs to be hosted. It is the first of it’s kind in Africa and a welcome development.
