Floreat Collegium is Latin for the expression ‘May the College Flourish”, this is the motto of King’s College (KC), a school that has been around, a lot longer than our nation. In celebrating 108 years of its existence, King’s College had a founder’s day lecture. In attendance were both Old ‘Kingsmen’ and young ones. It was held at a hall in King’s College, located at Catholic Mission Street Lagos.
The lecture was a blend of both the past, present and future values of KC and how it may be exemplified into making a new Nigeria possible. The Guest speaker at the event was Isma’ila Muhammadu Zakari, President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
In his speech, he highlighted chivalry, hard work, honesty and perseverance as qualities that could make a new Nigeria possible. A brief history of the enduring college for boys was highlighted. This prestigious institution was founded in 1909, it was a joint decision made in the colony of Lagos in 1906, that a school for boys be established.
According to history, the school was built with the sum of ten thousands pounds, with great Nigerian men, going through its four walls. Some of the great men who are old boys of King’s College are:HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II, Hakeem Belo-Osagie, Dr. Sunny F. Kuku, Alex Ekwueme, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, Otunba Adeniran Ogunsanya, Pastor-Ituah-Ighodalo, Isma’ila Muhammadu Zakari.
