Ojelabi Honoured With 80th Posthumous Birthday And Book Presentation

King Solomon Ekhaiyeme

It was a great evening for the OjelabI family, as the late Chief Adekunle Ojelabi’s 80th birthday was celebrated posthumously at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.

The event was graced by the creme de la creme of society, who came out to celebrate the great historian and launch his book.

The special guest of honour, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was represented by his wife, Mrs. Bola Obasanjo. Teacher, lawyer and activist, Pastor Tunde Bakare, was also represented by Mr O. Enang, while Nigerian billionaire entrepreneur, Tonye Patrick Cole, was there to take charge of the book launch as well as the launch of a new foundation in late Ojelabi’s name. Pastor Wale Adefarasin and the former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mr Femi Pedro, were also some of the notable personalities at the event.

The late Ojelabi was a prolific writer, who worked on a number of books, including “A Textbook of Government for West Africa”, which was written with Areoye Oyebola and Boluwaji Olaniyan, and a “Textbook of West African History”, which he had sole authorship rights to.

With interests in drama, chess, music, swimming, literature and educational pursuits, the late Ojelabi was the Treasurer of the Nigerian Union of Teachers 1967-1972 and the General Secretary of the Association of History Teachers of Nigeria.

At the event, the late Ojelabi’s friend, Professor Stephen Adebanji Akintoye, an ex-Senator, received a standing ovation for his brilliant lecture on the state of history as a subject in the country. Scholars and historians were able to share their views on the historical perspective of Africa, particularly West Africa.
