Ras Kimono Memorial Day: Sights And Sounds

King Solomon Ekhaiyeme

The Ras Kimono Memorial Day lecture held recently at the Copyright Organization of Nigeria (COSON) house, Ikeja, Lagos.

The event, which was attended by notable personalities, including Chief Tony Okoroji, Chairman/President of COSON Group; Prince Bisi Olatilo, Chairman Biscon Group, and a host of others, was an avenue for friends, colleagues, and family of the late reggae artiste to celebrate him.

While giving his lecture, Professor Duro Oni, lecturer at the University of Lagos, spoke highly of Ras Kimono and how positively he influenced everyone around him.

The touching documentary on the life of Ras Kimono which was viewed by the audience at the event was noteworthy. Also worthy of note was the launch of Oge Kimono’s album. The album, Kimono’s daughter revealed, should have been a surprise gift to her dad, but he passed on before she had the chance to fulfill that dream.

The celebration was moved later that evening to the Nite Shift Coliseum at Opebi, Ikeja, where a mega jam was held in honour of the late Ras Kimono. Organised by COSON, the jam had in attendance a host of artistes, including Righteous Man, Buchi, Orits Wiliki, Dede Mabiaku, Sound Sultan, Covenant Child, King Wadada, among others. These artistes also thrilled the audience to great performances.
