Nigerians on Twitter are celebrating after ACP Abayomi Shogunle was removed as the Head of the Nigerian Police Complaints Rapid Response Unit and transferred to Ebonyi following comments he made recently.
His removal came two days after making a controversial statement on the illegal raid and rape of some ladies by the police in Abuja.
Shogunle had taken to his Twitter page to respond to those who were condemning the police for what they felt was an unjust arrest of citizens and abuse of their human rights.
“Those making noise on the clampdown on prostitutes in #Abuja; •Prostitution is a crime under the law •P is a sin under the 2 main religions of FCT residents •Medicine says P is spreading HIV & STD •P is lifeline of violent criminals •P don’t pay tax • (Nigeria) culture frowns at P,” he posted when the news of the unlawful arrest first broke out.
Abayomi then followed that tweet up with another one a day later: “I have seen the video by one activist saying "No vagina in Abuja is safe" following the arrest & conviction in court of some women involved in prostitution. Pls inform girls making rape allegation with use of pure water sachet as condom to contact @PoliceNG_CRU on 08057000001-2.”
Both Shogunle and the Nigerian police were lambasted, with one Twitter user branding him a bigot.
It seems like the cries of the masses were heard and action taken against the top police official after a petition to remove him was opened.
“Yes, he has been removed and redeployed to Ebonyi State as Area Commander of Nkalagu,” Police Spokesperson, Frank Mba, reportedly said on Friday when confirming Shogunle's redeployment.
ACP Abayomi has since edited his Twitter profile to "Pioneer head @Policeng_CRU" as against the 'head Policeng_CRU" that was previously there.
Below are some of the reactions of Twitter users.
