A primary and secondary school in Bauchi has been shut down by the state government over illegal marriages among senior students in the school.

The closure order for Sa’adu Zungur Model Primary and Secondary School was given on Friday by the state deputy governor, Nuhu Gidado, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education following reports on the illegal marriages.

In a statement released by the deputy governor, issued by his Special Assistant on Communications, Yakubu Adamu, moral decadence in the society was cited as the reason for such illegality.

According to Gidado, the school would remain closed until a committee set up by the state government to investigate the matter comes up with a detailed report and recommendations.

Although both male and female students had separate classrooms for learning, it was gathered that the illegal marriage functions have been going on amongst the kids for a while.

However, it only came to the knowledge of the teachers last week when noise and cheers from jubilant co-students during one of such wedding ceremonies in the school premises was conducted between two students in senior secondary school 2..

They reported their findings to the school’s principal, Mallam Ahmed Zailani, who escalated the issue to the Ministry of Education.

Further inquiries revealed that N500 was the usual amount paid as the bride price by the male students before solemnization.
