Lagos Boat Mishap: Death Toll From Accident Rises To 15

Not less than 15 persons have been confirmed dead in the boat accident that occurred on Saturday, June 29, at Badore, near Lekki, Lagos, according to the Lagos State Emergency Agency.

Reports are that the tragic incident occurred at about 10 pm when the 20-passenger capacity unmarked boat with a 60″Hp engine capsized after it was hit by severe waves en route Egbin Jetty in Ijede at Ikorodu.

A pregnant woman was the first casualty of the mishap that rocked the boat that had started its journey from a jetty at Badore, near Ajah, on the eastern flank of Lagos State.

Following recovery efforts by LASWA, LASEMA, Lagos State Ambulance Services and the Nigeria Police Force, four more bodies were recovered on Sunday June 30 and 11 more yesterday.

“Search and rescue are still ongoing for the other missing persons yet to be found by officials of Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and Marine Police with support from the local divers.

"Community leaders, as well as local fishermen in the area, have been informed to avail the agency of any information through the emergency toll-free lines 112/767 to enhance total recovery,” a statement released by LASEMA and signed by its public affairs officer, Kehinde Adebayo, reads.

Those whose relations are missing have been urged to report to the Marine Police or any police station around the scene of the accident.
