Air Peace Captain Debunks Rumours Of Landing Aircraft Without Tyres

Austin Papi

On July 23, an Air Piece flight made a hard landing, causing its nose wheel to collapse in the process at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. Reports emerged that the aircraft landed without tyres, which was the reason for the incident.

Captain Simisola Ajibola, the pilot who operated the affected Air Peace flight on Tuesday, has now come out to refute these claims. She explained that the accident which saw the hose wheel of the plane collapse occurred after the aircraft had already landed, adding that it was impossible for the plane to have taken off without tyres in the first place.

Captain Simisola said:

The report about initial landing without tyres is not true. The incident happened after we touched down.  I didn’t go into the air without tyres, we weren’t on a descent without tyres. Some reports say we called for emergency while in the air and that is not true. It was after we landed we asked for emergency services. So whatever happened, happened on the runway that day.

Investigations into the incident have begun and preliminary results would be released soon. This was disclosed by Tunji Oketunbi, the Corporate Communications Manager of the Accident Investigation Bureau [AIB].

"It is a cumbersome process. Some components have been retrieved from the airline to help with the investigation. So it will take some time but we are doing everything possible to ensure the report is out sooner than expected,” Oketunbi said.
