Church Security Guard Steals Money In Offering Box

Austin Papi

A security guard at one Saint Dennis Catholic Church, Akoka, Bariga, Lagos, identified as Michael Nwaogwu, allegedly went into the church in the middle of the night to steal N2,385 from an offering box.

The police arraigned him and charged him with theft following a tip-off from his co-guard, Musa Ayay, who was also on duty with the culprit.

The hearing of the case began on Monday, July 29, at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos. The prosecution counsel, Godwin Oriabure, explained that the co-guard, Musa Ayay, noticed something was amiss when he saw that the offering box looked tampered with. He confronted the defendant, Michael, who confessed to stealing the money but pleaded with his colleague to cover for him.

However, Musa reported Michael to the authorities and he was apprehended by the police. The missing money was later found in his underwear. The prosecutor claimed in court that the defendant, Michael, had contravened section 287 of the 2015 criminal law in lagos and should be handed three years imprisonment under that section of the law.

The court's magistrate, Oluwatoyin Olujomi, admitted the defendant to a N30,000 bail with two sureties also in sums, partly because the defendant was a first time offender with no criminal record. The case was further adjourned until August 19 for final proceedings.
