One Dead As Police Clash With Suspected Cult Groups In Delta Community

Austin Papi

A fierce shootout between police and a cult group in Delta State has led to the death of a yet-to-be identified person.

According to reports, policemen from Ovwian/Aladja Division in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State allegedly had a clash with suspected cultists at express junction.

The victim’s group had allegedly opened fire on the police who had gone to the area to calm the situation. All attempts to quell the clash of two rival cult groups by the police led to a full blown attack, as the cultists opened fire on the approaching security team, which led to an exchange of fire. One of the suspects was gunned down, while others fled the scene.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Adeyinka Adeleke, confirmed the report, saying, “Cultists clashed with police and one was shot dead. The person is a cultist.”

Delta, Rivers and Edo States are said to be the homes of cultism, as youths in those states are initiated into one fraternity or the other, starting as early as their secondary school days. Cultism at the university level is so much worse, as undergraduates fight for bragging rights. It is also reported that the rate at which bodies turn up butchered in these states are alarming.

The Governor of Delta state, Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, has beefed up security in the state, placing police units at strategic places for swift action in reports of cult clashes.
