Headies Awards 2019: Was This The Most Disappointing Edition Ever?

The 2019 edition of the Headies Awards has come and gone but not without some interesting talking points that would last us the next few days.

From the "Next Rated" to the "Song of the Year" and even the "Artiste of the Year" category, there are still debates amongst music fans on who should have won what.

The event, which held on Saturday night, October 19, 2019, saw Teni, Falz and Burna Boy end the night as the biggest winners but the show also received harsh criticisms online for its organization, or rather, lack of it.

For many, it was the most boring edition of the event in recent years, with some attendees taking to their social media pages to lament about the boredom.

From the late start of the show, which ultimately led to it being rushed, down to some of the guests who presented awards, we might never know how some of those decisions were made.

While the show was on at the Convention Centre at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, Wizkid was having his Star Boy concert at the O2 Arena in London.

That seemed to affect the quality of the show drastically, as some of the big names in the Nigerian music industry were out there in London supporting Wizkid.

Some of the artists who won awards had to send representatives to pick it up for them while they performed their best songs to a sold-out crowd.

Let's talk about the event hosts. For this year, the organisers decided to go with iconic rapper, Reminisce, and actress, model and media personality, Nancy Isime.

On the red carpet, the duo seemed like a perfect fit with their stunning dresses as they posed for pre-event pictures.

But it seemed that was where the connection between them ended. Just a few minutes into their presentation together, they were already a trending topic on Twitter.

Obviously, there was no synergy between them and it was largely from the part of Reminisce, who was doing hosting duties for the first time.

At some point, he left the stage and didn't return, leaving Nancy to carry on with the show. He would later go on social media to admit his flaws while also thanking the organisers for giving him the platform.

But it wasn't all bad at the event. Few and far in between, there were some exciting moments during the show. Like when BBNaija 2019 winner, Mercy 'Lambo' Eke, and first runner up, Mike Edwards, came on stage to present an award together.

Teni, who also bagged a few awards that night, performed her hit song 'Case' with the ladies man, Mike. While DJ Cuppy and Bovi's presentation had almost everyone asking why they didn't host the show.

Yeah, we know it's never easy to pull off an event like this and the organisers would probably not be getting the kind of negative reviews they are getting online if it was another event.

But this is the Headies. This is like our own version of the Grammys and it was the 13th edition. So, you see where the disappointment of most people stems from.

We trust the crew will enjoy the success they've achieved with this one, and then when the whole buzz has died down, go back to the drawing board and try to sort the issues they had from this one. Next year, we would be expecting better!
