Officers of the Zamfara State Police Command confirmed that 14 persons were killed and 10 others injured by local bandits in Karaye village, in Gummi Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

According to reports, the attack was the first major breach of the peace agreement between the state government and the bandits initiated by Governor Bello Matawalle.

Recall that Governor Matawalle had hosted some bandits and herdsmen in the government house while reaching a peace treaty with them. Prior to this recent killings, the state had not recorded any death at the hands of bandits since the last attack.

The statement presented to newsmen in the state capital, Gusau, by the Zamfara Police Public Relations Officer, SP Muhammad Shehu, said the attack had occurred on Sunday.

The reports explained that a total of 14 persons were killed, 10 others sustained gunshot injuries while some houses were razed by fire.

SP. Shehu also recalled that on November 3, some members of the local vigilantes, known as ‘Yan Sakai’ from Bardoki village, had attacked and killed nine Fulanis who were alleged to be Fulani herdsmen. This has now sparked rumours that the bandits came for a reprisal attack.

The lives claimed by bandits in 2019 has reached the high figure of 2000, especially in remote villages located in the Northern states of Nigeria. Governor Matawalle is yet to speak on the recent killings.
