Gov. Rauf Aregbesola Set to Contest for Red Chambers’ Seat in Lagos

By Sofowora Oladapo

Governor Rauf Aregbesola is not new to politics, having served as a commissioner in Lagos State before moving to Osun State to be a two-term governor. Despite the support that helped his emergence for his re-election bid, the governor seems to have been losing those who matter most to him in Osun State politics. The recent political slap on his face occurred when the death of former Senator of Osun west senatorial district, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, died and his seat was thrown vacant.

Aregbesola received a political jab when his APC candidate was defeated at the July 8 polls, with a whooping land slide margin, as PDP’s Senator Ademola Adeleke emerged the winner of the polls and was sworn in to complete his elder brother’s tenure at the Red Chambers. When Aregbesola saw this political development, where he misfired, he knew that his political wings had been trimmed. His once top influence in the Osun State politics was gradually becoming a shadow of himself.

Like the Yoruba proverb; ‘If going forward is not possible, going back is the best option’; close sources hinted  to ‘Happenings’ that the Osun State Governor, is planning to return to Lagos West Senatorial district to contest for the seat at the Red Chambers, after completing his term as two-term governor of Osun State.

The current senator representing the district, Sen. Olamilekan Solomon ‘Yayi’, is poised to move down to the rocky state to contest for the Oke-mosan top job, which will throw the seat vacant in 2019.  Aregbesola is looking forward to filling up the lacuna.

Many describe the move of the Osun State Governor as greedy, over ambitious, wanting to remain in the corridors of power, and a plot that will fail before actualization. Some political watchers have said his robust and cordial relationship with his former boss and APC starlet, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, gives him an edge to emerge the senator to represent the district come 2019.

Aregbesola, will have to battle for the soul of Lagos West Senatorial district, with former Lagos Deputy Governor, under the Raji Fashola regime, Mrs Orelope-Adefurile. Sources further hinted that, she has been quietly doing her political work underground, where she met with some top politicians, within the district, to support her ambition by clinching the party’s ticket to contest for the senatorial seat.
