It is not news that World Cup 2026 will be hosted by three countries, United States, Canada and Mexico in what have become known as the ‘United bid’, considering all three countries are located in the same continent (North America). Thus the bid to host the World Cup 2026 was between Morrocco and the ‘United Bid’.
For Morrocco, this will be the 5th time it is losing a bid to host the World Cup, 200 eligible votes, 134 voted for the ‘United Bid’ and 65 voted for Morrocco, with Iran voting for neither. Clearly ‘United Bid’ garnered more votes. The interesting thing is the fact several African countries chose to vote against Morrocco, thereby putting the values of ‘Pan Africanism’ into question.
Leading the pack of African Nations who voted against their ‘own’ is South Africa, it is inferred that South Africa did not forget that Morrocco voted for Germany, against her in 2006, in her bid to host the World Cup.
Other African nations that voted against Morocco are; Benin, Guinea, Liberia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Cape Verde, Botswana, Lesotho. It is also inferred that some African countries have not forgotten that Morrocco did not host AFCON 2015 because of the Ebola scare.
Reportedly, Morocco’s 2026 World Cup hosting bid was also affected by the Western Saharan conflict. The Western Saharan battle for Independence and Moroccan presence in Sahrawi Republic. Furthermore the lack of infrastructure to host an event of this magnitude, may have hurt her bid.
