Leah Sharibu’s Mother Files N500m Law Suit Against FG

Boko Haram abducted 119 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe state in February 2018.

The Dapichi abduction is four years after 276 Chibok girls were kidnapped in a similar manner.

The abduction of the Chibok girls led to the largest Nigerian human rights campaign. It went global with the hashtag ‘Bring Back Our Girls’.

Since the Dapichi girls abduction, there has been National outrage. Boko Haram released most of the Dapichi girls but held five of them in captivity.

Leah Sharibu has been in captivity for 7 months because she did not renounce her Christian faith

However, Leah’s mother, Rebecca Sharibu is suing the  Federal Government for its ‘dereliction of duties’. She is also seeking N500 million in damages and demanding the safe return of her child.

Furthermore, the suit with number FCH/L/cs/1528/18 was filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos. It is compelling the government to secure the immediate and unconditional release of the Leah Sharibu.

It is also “an order compelling the defendants to employ every means in securing the plaintiff from the custody of her captors; an order compelling the defendants to pay the plaintiff the sum of N500 million being compensation for the indignities and human deprivations suffered by the plaintiff as a result of the defendants’ dereliction of statutory duties in securing her release from her captors since the month of February, 2018 till date of this action”.

According to family members of the abducted girl, the federal government has not reached out to them since the kidnap of their child.

Recall that Leah Sharibu was begging for her freedom in an audio tape made public
