At the moment, there is an undercurrent of unrest in Osun State. As INEC declared Gboyega Isiaka Oyetola of APC the Winner of Osun Rerun.

Recall that the electoral commission declared the original election inconclusive, thus mandated a Rerun, on the 27th Sept. 2018.

However several Independent Election Monitoring Group, chief amongst them, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) have condemned the electoral practices of the Rerun.

The CDD has asked that government institutions that participated in any form of election malpractice are investigated. Following allegations of malpractice, intimidation and violence.

In a statement from the group, shortly after the Rerun,

“In the light of these anti-democratic acts, which have undermined the sanctity of the ballot. Therefore, we hold strongly the view that the re-run poll of Thursday, September 27, 2018. Does not meet up with the minimum standards for free, fair and credible elections. It falls short of global best practices in democratic elections which Nigeria aspires towards.”

The governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke said the Osun Rerun was ‘brazenly rigged’.

He went further to say that INEC and security agencies in support of the ruling APC denied Osun people their right to vote.

Senator Ademola Adeleke has vowed to challenge Oyetola’s victory in court.

Allegedly, several PDP voters were prevented from voting, through intimidation and violence.

This worrying turn of event leaves many with a sense of foreboding of what the general election in 2019 would be.
