Lionel Messi has asked his Barcelona teammats to improve defensively after their 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao.

The draw was the third consecutive time the Catalan’s have failed to get maximum points in a La Liga match.

The Barcelona captain was left on the bench from the start of the game with Valverde eying their trip to Wembley in the Champions League.

The Argentine came off the bench to assist Munir El Haddadi for Barca’s equalizer but wasn’t impressed with their defending.

“There is no anxiety. This is just the beginning [of the season].

“We only feel anger for the last two results. The team played a good first half at Leganes and we lost. We create situations to win.

“Last year we hardly conceded goals but now teams are scoring against us with their first attempt. We cannot afford to concede goals in every game. We have to improve and become stronger in defence, which is the most important thing.”

Barcelona have conceded in four of their last five game, their only clean sheet was the 4-0 win against PSV in the Champions League.
