It is no longer news that APC Oyo, handed Adebayo Adelabu the Governorship ticket.
This was announced at the APC primary held on Sunday, 30th September 2018 at Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
Although Adelabu may have clinched the gubernatorial ticket, for Oyo state, he was up against several influential contestants.
Namely; Otunba Alao Akala, former Governor of Oyo state; Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe (an endorsee of Governor Abiola Ajimobi), Dr. Abdulazeez Adeduntan, Dr. Owolabi Babalola, Dr. Olusola Ayandele.
However not many know why APC gave Adebayo Adelabu the governorship ticket for Oyo state.
Thus there are speculations that APC having learned their lesson with Osun Governorship election, needed an influential candidate, grounded in the political matters of Oyo state.
Recall that Adebayo Adelabu is not just the ex deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He is from a well known political family in Oyo state,
He is the grandson of prominent Ibadan politician, Adegoke Adelabu. Who was a nationalist and politician under the old Western Region which had Ibadan as its capital at the time.
For APC, to clinch victory at the polls, come the 2019 general election, their candidate must stand head to head with the flag bearer of the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Seyi Makinde.
Consequently, the close shave with defeat at the Osun state election, have APC carefully picking their flagbearer.
Furthermore, President Muhammadu Buhari to foster his re-election bid, APC needs a stronghold of the South-West.
At the moment, Ekiti and Osun state are under the control of the ruling party APC.
