Pep Guardiola has hailed Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as “two phenomena” players based on their exploits over the years.

Both Messi and Ronaldo have won the Ballon d’Or five times respectively in the last ten years, a feet the former Barcelona coach says pitches them in a separate class from their peers.

Guardiola enjoyed some of his best moments as manager with a Barcelona team that had Messi tearing defense apart.

And has spoken severally of his admiration of the Argentine. He has equal respect for Ronaldo too who he agrees is an exceptional player like Messi.

“Leo is a competitive, fierce animal,” the Catalan told reporters at Festival dello Sport.

“That helps others to be competitive. He hates to lose and plays like when he was a kid. In big matches, if the team helps him, he makes the difference.

“Together with Cristiano [Ronaldo] we have lived and are living an era of two phenomena.

“They have spent 10 years scoring 50 goals a season. It’s incredible. It’s not one year, it’s year after year, more and more.”

Both Ronaldo and Messi have been nominated for another Ballon d’Or award, but this time Luca Modric is favourite to win it after winning the UEFA player of the year and FIFA The Best awards.
