Tragedy hit the Federal University of Agriculture (FUAM) in Makurdi as the Professor of Biological Sciences from the Ibo ethnic group, Prof Frank Onyezili committed suicide.
It was gathered that the incident which occurred last weekend, came as a shock to the entire university.
Onyezili took his own life, last week Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, by drinking poison and leaving behind a suicide note.
Reportedly, his decision to commit suicide may be connected to depression and loneliness. This is because his wife and children left him and moved out of the country.
Director of Protocol and Information of the university, Chief Mrs. Rosemary Waku confirmed the tragedy to newsmen on phone.
Mrs Waku said, “Professor Onyezili committed suicide on Friday last week at FUAM”.
She stated that the late professor left a suicide note behind, but she cannot reveal the content of the note to journalists for several reasons.
Police spokesman DSP Moses Yamu told reporters that he was yet to get the detail of the incident from the Divisional Office.
Newsmen visited the residence of the deceased in the campus of the university. Consequently, sympathizers mostly academicians were seen signing the condolence register.
They described the late prof as a perfect gentleman and wondered why he took his own life.
