Paris Saint-German and Italy midfielder Marco Verratti has apologised for his drunk-driving after he was caught by French police.

The 26-year-old was subjected to a roadside check in his car last Tuesday in Paris and his blood alcohol level was found to be higher than required limits for drivers under probation.

PSG announced the player would be deprived of a portion of his monthly ethics bonus.

He apologized to his teammate and management of the club the next day and has now issued a public apology.

Verratti played 90 minutes in PSG’s historical win against Lille in their Ligue-1 encounter.

“It was a bit hard, I had two or three difficult days,” Verratti said in a post-match interview.

“I made a mistake, I think that shouldn’t happen but that could happen to everyone, football player or not.

“I already apologised the next morning when I arrived here, with the coach and with the club. I told my team-mates what happened to me. I apologise, I hope it will be a good experience to remember for me.

“I also apologise to the fans, I know I have a public responsibility and that’s important. On the pitch, I will always be at 100 per cent. Now, I will try to give even more because I know I have something to earn forgiveness for.”
