Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde says Lionel Messi finishing fifth-place in the Ballon d’Or rankings is ‘absurd’.

The Argentine wasn’t included in the top three for the first time since 2006, finishing fifth on voting.

Luca Modric won the award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann with Kylian Mbappe finishing fourth.

While Valverde has congratulated the Croatian on his win, he couldn’t explain Messi’s drop to fifth place.

“I’m not going to get into that, whether it’s right or wrong how an award ended up,” the Spaniard said.

“I think the people who voted for it have to answer that. Everyone has their own opinion. To us it’s absurd. We congratulate Modric on his win.”

Messi has won the award a record five times with long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine won the golden boot for top scorer in Europe as Barcelona won the League and Cup double.
