Pele: “Messi Has Only One Skill, Maradona Was Much Better”

Legendary Brazilian striker Pele has suggested that both he and Diego Maradona were much better footballers compared to Lionel Messi.

The Iconic football star who scored over 1000 goals in his career believes the Blaugrana great is too ‘one-dimensional’.

According to Pele, Messi “only has one skill” and I shouldn’t be compared to him or Argentine legend Maradona.

The Barcelona captain can “only shoot with one leg” and does not use his head well enough to compare with other greats.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is regarded as one of the finest footballers to play the game. All-time top scorer for both his club and country with countless records attached to his name.

But all of that does not count in the grand scheme of things for Brazil’s three-time World Cup winner.

Speaking to Folha de Sao Paulo, Pele said: “How can you compare? To compare with Pele, it has to be someone who shoots well with the left and right, and scores headers.”

“How can you make a comparison between a guy who heads the ball well, shoots with the left, shoots with the right and another who only shoots with one leg, only has one skill and doesn’t head the ball well?”

Pele suggested a few other icons who he rates above the Messi, including Argentine great Maradona who he says was much better.

“As far as I’m concerned, Maradona was one of the best players ever. If you ask me, ‘Was he better than Messi?’ Yes, he was. Much better.” Pele continued.

“[Franz] Beckenbauer, [Johan] Cruyff were also excellent players.”

Messi has over 600 goals for club and country, winning 9 La-Liga titles and four Champions League finals.

He’s won the U-20 world cup and Olympic football events but has failed to lift a senior tournament for Argentina.
