Travellers en route to the local airport were thrown into panic as the Forte Oil petrol station close to the local airport went up in flames.
As a result of the fire outbreak, traffic in the area was at a standstill. Passengers and eyewitnesses told Happenings that firefighters were on ground to control the inferno.
Also for safety reasons, passengers at arrivals were evacuated from the building. A passenger, Andinouwen Attah, arriving from Uyo said;
“We saw the huge smoke when our plane was about to land and when we got closer to the arrivals, the fire got bigger.
“We were waiting for baggage claim when we heard the siren of fire trucks and firefighters run into the arrivals to urgently evacuate us.
“I am not sure when it started, but our flight touched down at 1:55pm. The fire outbreak occurred right outside the arrivals, that is when you exit the arrivals going outside. Some people said it’s a filling station, some say it’s a fuel tanker.”
At this time, the cause of the fire outbreak is yet unknown.
