African velvet tamarind popularly called Awin in Yoruba, Tsamiyar kurm in Hausa and lcheku in Igbo.

It is a seasonal fruit with an orange pulp, it has a sweet and tangy taste

As a matter of fact, not everybody knows the health benefits of it.

People just buy tamarind because they enjoy the fruit.


1. Tamarid helps reliefs menstrual cramp and stops Diarrhoea

The stem bark extract has a significant analgesic property that can be used to reduce menstrual pain.

It can also be used to stop diarrhea, add papaya leaf( pawpaw) salt and water to it

2. The stem of velvet tamarind is used as a chewing stick because it improves oral hygiene and cures a toothache

The stick contains saponin which adds cleaning effect to the teeth and at the same time removes plaques and carries on the teeth of users.

3.velvet stem bark can reduce inflammation in bronchial tubes that occur due to bronchitis

The pulp contains lots of vitamin C that fights against microbial infections.

4. It is also good for malaria according to research, the leaf extract inhibits the growth of Plasmodium falciparum which causes malaria

Therefore taking a combination of the leaf can cure malaria.

5. The leaves of tamarid are highly diuretic-promotes the production of urine

Making it easier for the heart to pump blood and reducing the risk of hypertension.

The extract of tamarind has the ability to increase gastric mucus secretion which helps ease gastric ulcer.
