US, UK Fault Buhari Over Suspension of Justice Onnoghen

The United States of America and the United Kingdom have respectively faulted President Muhammadu Buhari over the circumstances surrounding the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

In a statement released on Saturday, the American embassy in Nigeria said it has received a lot of criticism trailing the illegal suspension of the Justice.

The embassy stated that the executive ought not to have suspended the CJN and replaced him with a preferred candidate without the approval of the National Judicial Council.

“We note widespread Nigerian criticism that the decision is unconstitutional and it undermines the independence of the judicial branch.

“We urge that the issues raised by this decision be resolved swiftly and peacefully in accordance with due process,” the US embassy stated.

Speaking in the same vein, the United Kingdom through the British High Commission in Nigeria berated the president for his action.

The UK representative in Nigeria advised President Muhammadu Buhari to respect the rule, and the spirit of the constitution of Nigeria.

The president, on Friday, suspended Justice Onnoghen, stating an order from the code of Conduct Tribunal.

There has been an uproar across the country over the removal of the Justice.

Many have also blamed the president for flouting the Appeal Court judgement and going ahead to suspend he Justice
