There are strong moves by the Lagos State House of Assembly to impeach the embattled Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

The outgoing governor has been summoned by the state lawmakers to appear before the Lagos State House of Assembly and explain how he was spending state funds before the submission of the budget to the house in December last year.

The Speaker, Hon Mudasiru Obasa, on Monday, urged the lawmakers to be patient and give the governor a fair hearing on the 2019 budget.

“For the interest of the state, it’s better we let the people know that a budget yet to be approved is being spent.

“We must let him come to explain what happened.

“You cannot commence expenditure without passing the budget.

“We will invite him to tell us the reason for the spending or we start gathering signatures for his impeachment,” the speaker stated.

But in a swift reaction, the Economic Planning Commissioner, Segun Banjo, has debunked the allegations leveled against the governor.

He said no money has been spent in the new year.

The State Accountant-General, loyal to the governor, has also addressed the House Committee on the issue.

He noted that a warrant is already in place that will allow the governor to spend up to 20 percent of the preceding budget before approval for the new year.

Obasa, before adjourning the meeting till Monday February 4, requested to see the law that will allow the governor to spend up to 20 percent before the approval of the budget.

The lawmakers are moving against the governor after a report surfaced that Ambode is financially supporting Jimi Agbaje, a candidate of strong opposition party against his party man, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Recall that Ambode lost his second bid to Sanwo-Olu over his stiff resistance to the overbearing nature of his god father, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
