Hope Dashed For Onnoghen As Appeal Court Refuses To Stop His Trial

The Court of Appeal, on Wednesday, surprised many with its ruling against the stay of proceedings filed by the embattled former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Describing the case as criminal in nature, the court in its judgement said Onnoghen’s case before Code of Conduct Tribunal has to be continued in the tribunal.

Recall that the CCT had earlier adjourned the case till Monday, January 28, before the Appeal Court thereafter ordered the tribunal to suspend the sitting until the discharge of current application before it.

The Appeal Court ruling also restrained Onnoghen’s removal before the president, sensing infraction with the case, flouted the Appeal Court judgement and went ahead to appoint Justice Tanko Muhammed as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria.

With the latest ruling, Onnoghen may not have soft landing in the tribunal despite the massive support given by many across the country and the international community.

While the National Assembly on Tuesday appealed to the Supreme Court to reinstate Justice Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria, celebrity lawyer, Femi Falana, has advised Onnoghen to step aside in the interest of the nation.

Onnoghen is presently facing trial over false asset declaration set up against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau.
