ASUU, Federal Government To Meet Today Over the Ongoing Strike Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government will meet today, Thursday, to resolve the ongoing strike action in major government owned tertiary institutions.

The last meeting, held with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, ended in a deadlock on Monday before the two parties agreed to continue talks on Thursday, February 7.

Confirming today’s meeting, the acting Director of the ministry, Rhoda, in her relaease made available to the media said Dr. Chris Ngige would represent the federal government and preside over the meeting.

Recall that before Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, to end the over two month old strike of the university lecturers on Monday.

The former senator tried all his possible best to end the strike on Monday as directed by the president but the stance of the union on negotiations of revitalisation fund for the Nigerian public universities dragged the meeting till Thursday.

But there are indications that the strike may end today, as the president has mapped out all plans against losing his second term bid.

The union embarked on the strike on November 4 over the poor funding of Nigerian universities and non-implementation of previous agreements by the government.
