Why Bill Clinton Cancelled Visit To Nigeria

Funsho Akinwale

Former United States President, Bill Clinton, has cancelled his visit to Nigeria ahead of the presidential election scheduled to hold on Saturday.

The US Statesman cancelled his trip to Nigeria to prevent his visit from being politicised by the Nigerian politicians.

Before the cancellation, Clinton and Baroness Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, were expected to visit Abuja for a peace meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and his main challenger, Atiku Abubakar.

Bill Clinton, in his statement through his spokesman, Angel Urena, said he has called off the visit.

“Over the course of the last several days, and after various conversations with different stakeholders, it’s become apparent that Bill Clinton’s visit to Nigeria has the potential to be politicised in a way that is not in line with the goals of the committee,” Angel said.

Clinton added that he would continue to support National Peace Committee towards peaceful and fair elections on Saturday.

Clinton had planned to deliver a keynote speech at a ceremony of the signing of peace accord meeting facilitated by Kofi Anan Foundation.
