Why INEC Postponed Presidential Election Till February 23

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed presidential and national assembly elections till February 23.

The decision was taken early Saturday after an emergency meeting between 12 national commissioners and INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood, in Abuja.

The INEC chairman will later today hold a media briefing to give comprehensive details of the logistic problems encountered by the commission.

The meeting began Friday evening and ended 1.30 am on Saturday before the election was postponed till next week.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Commission, Rotimi Oyekanmi, also assured the newsmen that the decision for the postponement will be stated today by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood.

Before now, there was apprehension that the election would likely be shifted following several crises plaguing the umpire body and some political party issues, among other problems.

A few Nigerians, including the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had requested the electoral body to postpone the general elections in Zamfara and Rivers States in order to correct some mistakes to pave way for a successful outing.
