Gunmen believed to be hired assassins, on Tuesday, February 1, killed Ifeanyi Ozoemena, the Imo State Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ozoemena was reportedly shot and killed on Tuesday night shortly after presiding over an APC state meeting in Ngor Okpala area council of the state.

The slain politician was said to have been trailed from his meeting place to his residence where he was murdered in the presence of his family members.

The incident is said to have ignited panic and fear in the state ahead of the rescheduled Saturday general elections.

The family kinsman, Chief Martins Opara, who confirmed the killing, said the whole family is presently in sorrow and tears over the gruesome murder of the APC chairman who is regarded as the family’s bread winner.

Opara said the killing is a huge loss to the family, adding that the community has sent delegation to the Imo State Police Command to fish out the culprits behind the dastardly act.

“We have met the Eze in council and have sent a delegation to DPO and the state command to arrest the killers.

“The deceased finished hosting a meeting of APC members in his ward after which gunmen operating in a jeep came and requested to see him. On sighting him, they opened fire on him severally until he gave up the ghost,” Opara said.

The cracks in APC, Imo State, leading to several factions is believed to have caused the killing of the APC chairman.

Recall party elders fell out with Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, when he imposed his son in-law, Uche Nwosu, as the next governor to succeed him.

This crisis went on for several months until Uche decamped to Action Alliance (AA) to realize his governorship ambition.

Further checks confirmed that some party members loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari have appealed to the National Working Committee in Abuja to dissolve the state party executive following Okorocha’s move to ensure that Nwosu becomes the next Governor of Imo State.
