Lagos State Government on Tuesday clamped down on the new commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Gokada and Maxokada across the state.

No fewer than 115 branded motorcycles were impounded over operating on the restricted routes, including one way routes around Ojota, Maryland and Ikeja.

Olayinka Egbeyemi, the Chairman of Lagos State Traffic Management, while speaking on the operation said the activities of the newly branded commercial motorcycle operators are illegal and are not being regulated or documented with Lagos State Government.

CSP Olayinka, in his address, posited further that in accordance with the Lagos Traffic Law, all commercial motorcycle operators are prohibited from operating around 475 restricted routes including highways and bridges across the state.

“Lagos State Government implored Lagos residents to henceforth desist from patronising commercial motorcycles on all restricted routes as passengers are as well liable for prosecutions.

“It is risky seeing all these newly branded motorcycles (Gokada and Maxokada) competing with motorists on highways and bridges across the state,” Olayinka stated.

He added that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, has also directed his men to go rampage on the operators around town and charge them to court after arrest.

The clampdown on Gokada, according to many, is coming at a wrong time when Lagos State Government is yet to take any measure to check the Lagos gridlock.

The branded motorcycle business was last year launched in Lagos and the demand has been encouraging and well accepted as a means to solve the challenges associated with logistics and transportation problems around the state.

The patronage has increased astronomically due to traffic jam and ongoing road construction across the state.

Unlike Uber, Gokada also has an application that regulates the operation on daily basis which provides safe and affordable smart mobility of businesses.
