Court Bars INEC From Holding Rerun Election In Adamawa State

March 23: Why governorship rerun election will not hold in Adamawa State

A high court sitting in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, has stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission from conducting a governorship rerun election in the state.

The commission had chosen March 23 to hold a rerun election in the state due to the number of cancelled votes being higher than the margin of lead votes between the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party.

The high court ruling is coming on the heels of failure of INEC to include the Movement for The Restoration and Defense of Democracy on the ballot paper.

With the new development, Adamawa State will not be part of the six states scheduled to hold rerun election on March 23.

The other five states, Sokoto, Kano, Benue, Plateau and Bauchi, are all in anticipation of the rerun election.

The electoral umpire had declared election inconclusive in the affected six states for several reasons, including an attack on a collation centre, ballot box snatching and discontinuation of the use of smart card readers, among other issues.
