So sad! Shonde to be hanged to death for killing his wife
Lekan Shonde has been sentenced to death by hanging over the gruesome killing of his wife, Ronke Shonde.
The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on Friday gave the final judgment on Shonde after several months of deliberations.
Delivering the judgement, Justice Josephine Oyefeso said that the death sentence slammed on Shonde was in accordance with Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
She said the court is satisfied with the ruling, adding that the prosecution has proven reasonable doubt with concrete evidence against the defendant.
Justice Josephine, during the hearing, threw more light on the background of the case, noting that the convict, in a bid to get a lighter sentence, was economical with the truth.
Explaining further, she said the accused had claimed he only slapped his wife when he overheard her on a phone praising the sexual prowess of a lover, but this did not match the old and fresh injuries on the deceased as reported by Dr. Shokunle Shoyemi, the pathologist in charge of the autopsy.
She stated that the deceased ought not to have inflicted herself with bruises on her cheek, the blood collection in the brain, brain swelling and other multiple injuries detected on the body.
All these revelations were among other concrete evidences that led to his death sentence.
The plea from his lawyer to temper justice with mercy over his failing health could not save Shonde from hanging to death.
It is on record that Shonde, 51, a deport worker, beat his wife to death at their Egbeda, Lagos, home after a heated argument on cheating allegations.
After severely beating his wife, Shonde was said to have locked her lifeless body and their two children in the house before the housekeeper called the attention of the police.
According to sources close to the family, the union was troubled by domestic violence, with Shonde accusing his late wife of having an extramarital affair with one Kayode, a general manager of a publishing firm.
