FG rests false declaration case against Onnoghen

The embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, heaved a sigh of relief on Thursday as Federal Government closed the case of false and non-declaration of charges instituted against him.

Though the reason for the closure of the case by the Federal Government still remains unclear, many believe Onnoghen’s suspension was politically motivated.

According to political watchers, the Chief Justice was replaced with a Northerner shortly before the election only to favour the president if the outcome of the presidential election turned out different.

Before the case was called off on Thursday, there were six witnesses on ground to testify against Onnoghen.

The hearing was ongoing before Danladi Umar, the Chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal, announced his decision to close the prosecution.

Reacting to the development, Malik Ibitoye, a strong politician from Ogun State, in a phone chat with Happenings Magazine said Buhari only suspended Onnoghen in a bid to manipulate the election tribunal.

“I am happy for the Chief Justice and he should be reinstated with immediate effect.

“At this point, I want to congratulate the incoming president of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“I am sure he would coast to victory at the tribunals,” Ibitoye affirmed.

Also commenting on the rested case, Ogbechi Kalu said Onnoghen should resign after being vindicated.

“He does not deserve to be treated like that, a highly revered man, I knew there was more to his suspension,” Kalu stated.
