The Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has declared Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Ademola Adeleke, winner of the 2018 Osun State governorship election.

The court sitting in Abuja on Friday held that Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress was not validly returned as governor of the state.

Leading to the ruling, the tribunal earlier today dismissed the separate objections raised by Governor Gboyega Oyetola and the Independent National Electoral Commission against the petition and Oyetola’s victory at the September 2018 governorship election in the state.

Adeleke, in his petition, had urged the tribunal to upturn Oyetola’s victory over irregularities that marred the governorship poll, claiming to have scored the majority of the lawful votes in the election.

But the electoral umpire, Oyetola and APC had filed their notices of preliminary objections, among others, collectively asking the tribunal to dismiss the case for lack of merit.

Justice Peter Obi, who led the three-man panel, while delivering his ruling struck out APC, Oyetola and INEC’s application, noting that their objections were misconceived.

Justice Peter Obi, in his judgement, said the tribunal had jurisdiction to hear the petition.

However, with today’s hearing in favour of Adeleke, there is presently wide jubilation in Osun State, especially the PDP ’s camp, over the much awaited victory that many said is long over due.
