Why INEC Suspended Presentation Of Certificate Of Return In Zamfara

“No Certificate of Return for Zamfara State’s elected officers,” says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission would not issue Certificate of Return to the elected officers of the All Progressives Congress, including the Zamfara State governor elect.

INEC’s decision is coming on the heels of the Court of Appeal’s judgement, which nullified the participation of the ruling party in the 2019 general elections in the state.

The Appeal Court sitting in Sokoto, headed by Justice Tom Yakubu, had on Monday, March 25, ruled against Zamfara High Court on the party primaries that enabled the governorship candidate, national and state assembly candidates to participate in the election.

The electoral umpire, while reacting to the Appeal Court’s ruling, said it would suspend the issuance of Certificates of Return for the national, state assembly and Zamfara governorship, which was earlier scheduled to hold today, Wednesday, March, 27, 2019.

INEC added that it can only present the certificates to the elected officers on ground, noting that the Supreme Court upturned the Court of Appeal’s judgement in favour of the elected members of APC.

Our checks confirmed that the ruling party has since headed to the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling of the Appeal Court, which sacked its members from being inaugurated as duly elected officers in the state.

Recall that shortly before the 2019 general elections, there was a factional crisis in the party before the Zamfara High Court favoured a rival faction in their judgement, which produced the present candidates.
