Four nationals, including a Nigerian woman, have been executed in Saudi Arabia for drug related offences.

Among the nationals executed were two Pakistani men, a Yemeni man and a Nigerian woman.

The Monday execution has brought the total number of people executed in 2019 in the country to 53.

Saudi Arabia is known as the country with the highest execution rates in the world for crimes, including drug trafficking, robbery, murder, rape and terrorism.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has berated Saudi Arabia for executing the Nigerian woman for such offences, describing the act as pathetic.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the execution of the Nigerian made it the 8th Nigerian to be executed for such cases in the country in 2019 alone.

Erewa added that 20 more Nigerians are on death row in the country for similar cases, while 12 had been prosecuted and are meant to serve various jail terms.

"So we have had cases where truly they didn’t commit the offence. We have appealed to the Saudi authorities to make the trials fair, open and ensure that justice is done.

“Even if you are going to die, you will know that you die for an offence you committed.

“We appeal to Nigerians going to Saudi Arabia to obey the laws of the land.

“Even kolanut is treated as a drug. We will continue to appeal to the Saudi authorities to treat some of the cases with some form of leniency,” she said.
