The nine suspected officials of Federal Inland Revenue Service detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission were, on Tuesday, granted bail.

The officials were earlier arrested and interrogated following allegations of fraud discovered in the agency.

According to the anti-graft commission, the officials who are mostly directors were released while investigation into the alleged fraudulent payments will continue.

Wahab Gbadamosi, the FIRS spokesman, while reacting to the ongoing investigation, said the inquiry by EFCC is a continuous and routine exercises which occurs from time to time in the agency.

He noted that FIRS as a law abiding agency of the government will co-operate with investigators in its efforts to unravel the alleged fraudulent payments.

Explaining further, he said Mr Hena, the Coordinating Director, Support Services Group, is not on the run as it is being wrongly reported in the media.

Wahab added that the director who is officially on medical leave would soon return to the country for resumption.

Hena is the second most senior official of the agency close to the chairman of the agency, Babatunde Fowler.

We are yet to confirm if Tunde Fowler is involved in the monumental scandal that has torn the agency apart, affecting some top staffers in the finance and account department of the agency.

The FIRS is saddled with collecting taxes and revenues of the federal government.

The agency, under Mr Fowler, has seen its revenue generation improve, setting new records. The agency said it collected about N5.32 trillion as revenue in 2018, the highest in Nigeria’s history.
