The secretary to the Kogi State Government, Dr. Mrs Folashade Ayoade, has denied accusations that the state government is owing civil servants thirty eight months salary arrears.

Dr. Ayoade, speaking as a guest on foremost political radio show, ‘Talk Politics with Eniola Awokoya’ on Happenings Radio, on Monday, explained that the state is only owing genuine and verified workers four months salary.

The SSG, who spent a large part of her career in the civil service and retired from the National Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) before joining partisan politics, explained that the government of Alhaji Yahaya Bello inherited an over bloated civil service bedeviled with several anomalies.

She added that the administration embarked on a verification exercise for the civil servants and many were discovered to be working with fake certificates, promotion irregularities, some had retired but substituted their names with those of their children on the payroll, among several other infractions.

According to her, those who couldn’t be verified were shown the way out and they are the ones claiming to be owed 38 months arrears, while verified workers are only being owed four months. She gave the assurance that all arrears will be cleared as soon as the administration receives the next tranche of bailout funds from the federal government.

Kogi State, under the leadership of Governor Yahaya Bello, has always been in the news, particularly because of the peculiar circumstances through which the governor came into power.

Governor Bello is seeking a second term in office and it remains to be seen if the issue of salary delays would not be a stumbling block to the realization of the ambition.
