Low Sperm Count: Causes And Prevention

Titilayo Ilori

Low sperm count is common among men. It is a condition where the sperm count of a man is low. If it is lower than the amount needed for ejaculation, it will be difficult to impregnate a woman. Here are a few causes of low sperm count and ways to prevent it.

1. Smoking

It is one of the main causes of low sperm count. Smoking over 20 sticks of cigarettes a day can reduce the quality of a man’s sperm.

2. Abuse of drugs

Some men are in the habit of abusing drugs, without thinking of the side effects. Drug abuse has a negative effect on sperm count.

3. Poor diet

Not eating a balanced diet also has a negative effect on your sperm. Try as much as possible to eat a balanced diet.

4.  Lack of exercise

Lack of proper exercise can decrease sperm count. Try to exercise once in a while to stay fit and get rid of stress. Fatigue can potentially interfere with sperm production.

5. Heat

Placing your laptop on your lap and soaking yourself in a hot bathtub is not the best. They both have a negative effect on your testicles and this act can damage your sperm count.

6. Obesity

Men who are obese can suffer from low sperm count and men whose jobs involve sitting for so long can face this problem. It is best to take a walk after sitting for a while.

7.  Consuming alcohol excessively

Excessive drinking of alcohol can lead to infertility. It can lower the production of sperm and of the male hormone testosterone.

8. Untreated infections

There are some untreated infections that can lead to low sperm count such as gonorrhea, and so on.  Exposure to chemical and drugs can also be responsible for low sperm count.
