President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, announced Mele Kolo Kyari as the new Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Kyari has replaced Maikanti Baru, the former Group General Manager of the NNPC.

The NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs, Ndu Ughamadu, has also released a statement to confirm the appointment.

Reacting to the new development, many have praised the president for removing Baru, saying that it is long over due following several corruption cases under his watch.

Further checks revealed that more heads would roll at NNPC, as part of the federal government plans to infuse transparency in the management and sales of various Nigeria’s crude oil grades.

Kyari would be the 19th Group Managing Director of the national oil company.

Until his new appointment, Kyari, a geologist, was Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division of NNPC and also doubled, since May 13, 2018, as Nigeria’s National Representative to the organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Kyari is expected to resume work on July 8 after a smooth transition from his predecessor.

Other chief operating officers appointed along with Kyari include, Roland Onoriode Ewubare (South-South) – Chief Operating Officer, Upstream.

Engr. Mustapha Yinusa Yakubu (North Central) – Chief Operating Officer Refining and Petrochemicals, Engr. Yusuf Usman (North East) – Chief Operating Officer, Gas and Power, Lawrencia Nwadiabuwa Ndupu (South East), Chief Operating Officer Ventures.
