Self-confidence is key in all human and social interactions. Trust me, you need confidence to advance in your career, excel in your studies and to make important life decisions.

I am sure we all know or have met one or two people that always excude confidence in everything they do. They always seem successful and are always winning. They are also popular and liked by many. They are almost close to perfection.

These people are not perfect at all. Actually, nobody is really. They just built their confidence overtime and this has propelled them to make smarter decisions that have made them successful in life.

You can achieve that too. We are all born with a natural innate confidence but life's experiences tend to batter our self-confidence sometimes. That strength, though, is still in there somewhere. You just have to dig deep and bring it forth. You can learn and relearn confidence.

Lack of confidence can stem from several factors, including childhood background, past relationships and experiences, a physical defect, health issues, social status, career choice, lack of skills and abilities, personal belief system etc.

If any of these factors outlined above is making you lack confidence in yourself and limiting you from moving forward in life, you need to do something drastic about it before it is too late.

A confident person always believes in himself or herself and has an overall positive mindset. Even when self-doubt creeps in sometimes, they still cheer up and keep moving forward. On the other hand, an insecure person, which is the opposite of a confident person is always doubting himself or herself and feels unworthy.

Do you want to be like the former? Then follow this step-by-step guide to improving your overall self-confidence.

● Be precise

What part of your life or yourself makes you lack confidence? What is holding you back? In what area do you want or need to be more confident about? Is it at your place of work? Among friends or family? In school? In your career? etc.

● Find out what triggers your confidence

Have you ever done something smart, nice or amazing that earned you compliments, praises and admiration? Can you remember how proud you felt? Reminisce on these moments. Do you have any hobbies or interests that help you feel more self-assured and confident? Engage in them more often.

● Be yourself

Don't be a photocopy. Don't copy anyone. Be true to yourself. Don't be scared of judgment, it is a part of life. It will only make you stronger and more confident. This is a major step in building your confidence.

● Be fully aware of and embrace both your strengths and weaknesses

No one is perfect. No one knows everything about everything. Each and everyone of us has at least one or two things we are very good at and know a lot about. We equally also have things that we do not know much about. We can learn about these things to gain more knowledge. Life is a continuous learning process.

● Stop the comparison

Compete with yourself and you alone. Stop comparing yourself and judging yourself based on other people's standards, successes and achievements, especially, in this age of social media and Instagram. This behaviour is rampant, as everyone wants to belong or slay for the gram. This is one of the major causes of lack of self-confidence and even depression.

● Speak words of affirmation to yourself every day

Make it a habitual exercise. When you wake up in the morning, stand in front of your mirror and speak positive words to yourself. Some assertions you may make may include: I am strong. I am smart. I am beautiful. I am confident. I am talented. I have what it takes. I am worthy. Say these words and mean them with all your heart.

● Learn from your mistakes

No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. We all goof once in a while. We don't always get it right. Don't let your mistakes define you. Make your mistakes, admit your mistakes, apologize when you have to, pick yourself up, cheer up, chin up and walk tall with your head held high. You are only human.

● Work on yourself

Acquire new skills. Learn new things. Re-invent yourself. Develop a new hobby. One of the best ways to improve your confidence is to discover a new passion or work on a new project. Once you learn something new and you have an in-depth knowledge of it to the point where you can even teach others and be an authority in that field, your self-confidence will skyrocket.

● Surround yourself with the right people

As you get older, you have to learn to choose your circle of friends wisely. Remove toxic people from your inner circle. Do you know anyone that is always talking you down, judging you, criticizing you harshly, etc? You just have to let them go no matter how much you love them. You can reach out to them and ask them to stop doing that, but if they refuse, it simply shows that they don't respect you. Cut them off now if you want to build your confidence.

● Stop procrastinating and go for it

Stop procrastinating. Start that project. Make that career change. Talk to that cute guy. Ask that pretty girl out. Go on that trip you have been planning for ages. Work on that brilliant idea. Start that business. Get your Master’s degree. Get married. Leave that toxic relationship. Get a new haircut. Get a makeover. Learn that new skill. Write that bestselling book. Take that leap of Faith today. Just go for it. You can do it.

● Stop the victim mentality

Be strong. Stop playing the victim. The world does not owe you anything. Take responsibility for your life and actions. Own your mistakes. Embrace your flaws. Make the best of any situation, good or bad. Learn the lessons and move on.

● It all boils down to you

You are the only one limiting yourself from being more confident, thereby standing in the way of your success in life. Dig into your mind. Scrutinize yourself objectively. Why do you lack confidence? What made you this way? Unlearn those self-limiting belief systems. Learn a new belief system of self-belief and self-confidence. Silence those negative thought patterns and your inner critic. You don't have to be perfect. You only have to be the best version of yourself.

There is only one unique you in this world and that my friend is your SUPER POWER.
